Iglesia Sponsored Primetime Ballers to be Honored at City Hall

April 20, 2012

Tuesday, April 24th at 7:30 pm, the Primetime Ballers, who won the International Pace Tournament in France in March 2012, will be honored in Rochester’s City Hall.

The basketball team of eight boys ages 11-13 travelled to one of Rochester’s sister cities, Rennes, France to compete in the international tournament. They defeated China, Tunisia, France and Spain to get to the finals. They won the championship beating Germany 35-15 in the final game.

SAT Prep Pilot Kicks Off at Early College

April 5, 2012

One hundred and twenty 9th and 10th grade students will take part in an SAT Prep pilot program at Early College. Iglesia tutors will work with the group to prepare them for the SAT exam, which the students will take in their Junior year.

The current average SAT score in the Rochester City School District is 790. The minimum required for entry to a four-year school is 950. Most large schools require upwards of 1200 points for acceptance into their programs.

Typically the RCSD students do not receive adequate preparation and test-taking strategies to ensure success. We believe this program will change all that, and give the students the same advantages students in other districts have in preparation for the test.

The program began this week, and will continue through the end of the school year. This same cohort will be enrolled in the program again next year.

Primetime Ballers to Compete in France

March 26, 2012

The Primetime Ballers, a group of Rochester area boys ages 11-13, will be competing in the Pace Basketball Tournament in Rennes, France, March 28-April 4th. The team is a parent run organization, and is being funded exclusively via fundraising events, and sponsorships from the Community Foundation and the Iglesia Educational Centers.

The boys, who come from various area schools, are coached by co-founder of Iglesia Educational Centers and the former School of the Arts Coach Gerard Iglesia.

The students will compete in the 13 and Under bracket, and will have a chance to compete against teams from France, Portugal, China, and Spain.

This eye-opening educational experience will provide healthy sports competition, and give the players an oportunity to make new friends.

While in Rochester’s sister city of Rennes, the students will be presenting a Proclamation from Mayor Tom Richards, to the Mayor of Rennes, Mr. Daniel Delaveau. Upon the student’s return, the boys will be honored at City Hall.

The team and their families will visit the famous Mont St.-Michel and the Port St-Malo. The trip will conclude in Paris with a tour of the Eiffel Tower.

State ELA and Math Tests Grades 3-8

Ongoing preparation for the ELA and Math tests is now in full gear at Iglesia. The tests are being administered several weeks earlier this year, with the ELA exams coming right after April break, and the Math one the week after that. In an effort to bump up preparation  the students will be practicing test-taking techniques, and some students may be bringing worksheets home for further practice. It is recomended that you spend time reading short stories to your children, and follow-up with questions about the ”main idea” and the details of the story. There will reportedly be a lot of that type of question on the exam.  In addition, we are offering tutoring on Saturdays at the Thurston Center. If you believe your child would benefit from attending tutoring over the next few Saturdays, please call us at 254-2071 so we can set up transportation.

At Iglesia Educational Centers, we are doing all we can to take the guesswork out of the exams, and get your child ready. As parents, teachers, tutors and students all work together,  we embody the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Let’s practice for success together!

Linsanity and Iglesia

March 7, 2012

Anthony Iglesia, son of CEO Karen Iglesia and husband Gerard, met New York Nicks sensation Jeremy Lin long before he became the talk of the town. Anthony, a basketball sensation in his own rite, who apeared on the Ellen Degeneres due to an association with Michael Jordan,  spent some time with the unknown Lin during a trip to Harvard in 2009. The two shot around, and talked about basketball for hours, and have kept in touch ever since. Anthony cosiders Lin to be a friend. In a D & C article published February 12th, Anthony was quoted as saying “I’m a lucky kid.”

Lin’s popularity saored, when he unexpectedly led the NY Knicks on a 5-0 run this year, while their star players were sidelined.

Anthony, who plays on two AAU basketball teams, plans to go to McQuaid next year, and is considering wearing the #17, in honor of Jeremy Lin.

Waiting List for Free Tutoring

February 8, 2012

The RCSD is no longer registering students for after-school tutoring. They are however adding students from the waiting list of applicants, who turned in registration forms prior to the recruitment period end.

Also, if your child was accepted into the Iglesia tutoring program, and has not yet attended sessions, he or she may be dropped from the list to make room for the hundreds of students hoping to get into one of our programs.

If you received a letter from the District indicating your child is registered with Iglesia, but need information on how to get your student started, please call 254-2071 and we will provide you with details on how to take advantage of this free service.

At Iglesia we know that spending extra time with a qualified tutor makes a big difference in a child’s ability to perform academically. We want your child to succeed. Call us today, and we will work with you to make sure your child gets the services he or she is registered for.
