The Iglesia 2011 Academy of Educational and Entrepreneurial Excellence
August 22, 2011
Friday concluded Iglesia’s 5th anual Summer of Opportunity Program. This year, twenty-five students attended five days a week over the past month and a half, and were exposed to 24 different guest speakers andvenues. Iglesia, through community partnerships, provided the students with a tour of the Rochester International Airport, the RPD Training Facility, RCTV Channel 15, the Federal Courthouse and Sharp Edgez Barber Institute.
The students heard from a commercial pilot, a small business owner, two Judges, Law Enforcement Officers, the President of the City Council and several motivational speakers. They even produced a televison show whereby they interviewed a professional basketball player and a gang specialist.
In addition to this exposure, the students ages 14-16 worked on pre-Algebra and ELA skills, took etiquette classes, and polished their interview techniques. Each person developed a 30-second elevator speach, and many discovered hidden talents and gifts during a talent discovery seminar.
The young people wowed us with digital Voice Thread presentations that they designed and completed, which describe the six-week program with pictures and sound. The four student teams did an outstanding job.
Comgratulations attendees for a job well done! The tools you have learned throughout this program will serve you well throughout your educational years and beyond! We are looking forward to your future success!
