Iglesia Educational Centers is in its second year of providing tutors for the RIT Liberty Partnership Program held at Greece Olympia High School.

This summer, Iglesia tutors were an integral part of the LPP Summer Math Camp, in which 25 high school students came to RIT every day for two weeks for workshops on college readiness and career exploration, as well as math skills and techniques.

In a recent article, Program Puts High School Students on Path to Success, published in the RIT University News, (Sept. 15, 2011), author Marie Lang, outlines the importance of RIT’s academic support programs ongoing throughout Monroe County, particularly at Greece Olympia High School.

Below is an excerpt of Marie Lang’s article:

“The need for support programs in the Greece area has been slowly increasing over the years,” says Katrina Wetzel, program counselor for the Liberty Partnerships Program. “Our current roster accommodates 203 9th- through 12th-grade students from Greece Olympia High School.”

“Students who participate in the Liberty Partnerships Program improve their problem-solving skills and academic success, Wetzel says. The program offers after-school tutoring sessions and life-skills workshops at Greece Olympia. Tutors are provided through Iglesia Educational Centers. Students also come to RIT for the Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival, Summer Math Camp and Super Saturday events, which cover topics on college readiness and high school dropout prevention.”

This year, twenty-five students attended five days a week over the past month and a half, and were exposed to 24 different guest speakers andvenues. Iglesia, through community partnerships, provided the students with a tour of the Rochester International Airport, the RPD Training Facility, RCTV Channel 15, the Federal Courthouse and Sharp Edgez Barber Institute. The students heard from a commercial pilot, a small business owner, two Judges, Law Enforcement Officers, the President of the City Council and several motivational speakers. They even produced a televison show whereby they interviewed a professional basketball player and a gang specialist.

In addition to this exposure, the students ages 14-16 worked on pre-Algebra and ELA skills, took etiquette classes, and polished their interview techniques. Each person developed a 30-second elevator speach, and many discovered hidden talents and gifts during a talent discovery seminar.

The young people wowed us with digital Voice Thread presentations that they designed and completed, which describe the six-week program with pictures and sound. The four student teams did an outstanding job.

Comgratulations attendees for a job well done! The tools you have learned throughout this program will serve you well throughout your educational years and beyond! We are looking forward to your future success!

The students built roller coasters, made weight-bearing chairs out of cardboard boxes, experimented with chromatography and scared us all with the rocketology project!

The STEM students went on field trips to RIT and the U of R, where the students asked lots of questions about college life. Representatives from both colleges explained the need to prapare now to meet entrance requirements and expectations. A panel of college students answered additional questions for the visitors, and many of the attendees said that they are determined to go to college when they graduate.

Iglesia believes in the value of transitional summer programs as they promote continuity, help the students to keep their skills up, develop new ones, and potentially provide them with an academic advantage in the fall.

This year’s camp was held at no cost to the students and their parents, and was funded in full by Iglesia and the Rochester City School District. We wish our STEM students all the best during the upcoming school year.

Thanks to the generosity of the Iglesia Educational Centers and the time and effort put in by all the volunteers, Coach Iglesia’s camps proved, yet again, to be an excellent opportunity for Rochester area students to improve upon their basketball skills, and participate in meaningful life-skills workshops.

The boys camp, held at East High School was staffed by former college players, many of whom played professionally, both nationally and overseas. These players shared their experiences and advice with the 80 young men in attendance during the four-day camp.

The girl’s camp, held at School 33, also maxed out as 40 young women showed up daily to listen, and learn. The guest speakers shared their personal experiences, and schooled the girls on balancing life as a scholar and athlete, and the art of perseverence and hard work. The coaches helped the girls to define their playing strengths, and improve upon their basketball skills and techniques.

All-Star teams were formed at the end of both camps, and a fierce competion ensued. Lots of hard work, laughter and learning took place, and the students left camp highly motivated, and better prepared for their upcoming varsity season.

Coach Gerard Iglesia, former Section V, Coach of the Year, and well-known mentor, has coached several NBA players, and is a leader in the development of local basketball talent. His annual invitational camps are highly anticipated, and always a phenomenal experience for the students and mentors alike.

Both camps were sponsored in full by the Iglesia Educational Centers, and were held at no cost to the students.
