Star guard, Brandon Triche, of the Syracuse Orange Men’s
Basketball Team, will visit several Rochester area schools on Friday, May 3^rd.

Triche, Mr. Basketball 2009, and Sports Illustrated cover Fall of 2012, has more wins than any other player in the history of Syracuse University men’s basketball.

Triche will be accompanying Karen Iglesia and Mayoral Candidate Lovely Warren, to several Rochester area schools. The goal is to encourage students to focus on their education, and to emphasize the importance of graduating from high school.

Brandon will take questions from students, and share highlights of his Syracuse University experience.

The program air date is Friday, April 26th at 8:30pm and then again on Sunday, April 28th at 12:30pm.

Chyna Receives Her Award

On Sunday, April 21st, 2013, Alex’Andre’a (Chyna) Aponte, a student at Greece Olympia High School,  was awarded the Liberty All-Star Regional Award for Academic Excellence. Chyna has been working very hard and is currently prepping for the upcoming RIT STEP Regional Math Bowl.

Iglesia and the Liberty Partnership Program at RIT, team up to provide programming and academic support.

A well-rounded, properly educated student provides him or her with plenty of options in moving towards a productive life. Karen’s 16 years of experience working with more than 30,000 students has given her insight into the educational, emotional and economic needs of the community. The charter school will provide a safe, productive environment where students develop their individual talents and skills, excel academically, and prepare adequately for a productive future.

Reminder: All City High School and Iglesia begin Regents review sessions January 5th, 2013. Free transportation and breakfast. Come and prepare for January Regents. If you put in the work, you will have an advantage, and be one step closer to graduation.

Also, Young Men’s Leadership Academy students will be participating in enhanced Integrated Algebra classes in preparation for the June Regents. For more information and to register, contact the YMLA office. Sessions begin Saturday, January 12th, from 10-1 at our Thurston Road Center, and run through June.

Students Getting Personalized Attention

Free tutoring services are set to begin in designated RCSD schools that qualify. Should your child need additional academic support, please contact his/her school and ask if said school will be providing Iglesia tutoring. Principals will be deciding in the next few weeks when and if tutoring will begin.

Habitat for Humanity Site

This summer 20 students participated in the Iglesia Academy of Occupational and Academic Enhancement. The students explored a plethora of careers and educational opportunities including jobs in the airline industry, law enforcement, construction, architecture, news media and civil service. The Iglesia SOOP students toured RIT, and had a question and answer session with a college panel comprised of alumni from Cornell, RIT and Fredonia. Throughout the program, the students perfected their interview skills, learned proper etiquette, and developed a 30-second elevator speech. Several times a week Iglesia instructors taught SAT Prep to familiarize the participants with the exam, and to increase their math skills. In addition, Iglesia provided hands-on engineering projects allowing students to use their teambuilding skills to design and execute carefully constructed plans.

We toured Habitat for Humanity, and volunteered at Foodlink. Judge Miller and City Council President Lovely Warren adressed the students, and admonished them to complete their education, and make good decisions.

Iglesia would like to thank all who made this program a success, and particularly the City of Rochester for funding this extremely valuable program. The students left with a sense of purpose and direction, and learned the value of the connection between education, career and community.

Brandon Triche

Brandon Triche addressed  one hundred and forty students from all over Monroe County who attended the four-day annual Iglesia sponsored basketball camps. The students were thrilled to meet Triche, and listened intently as he shared an account of his rigorous academic and athletic schedules. Triche gave the students tips on how to succeed in college, and how to stay focused in order to reach goals. He then put the students through various drills and exercises designed to challenge the students and motivate them to work hard at perfecting their skills.

Triche, a senior guard on the Syracuse University Men’s Basketball team was a gracious guest, and spent much time answering questions and allowing people to take pictures. A former Iglesia Educational Center student, Triche understands the need to focus on one’s studies, and has no problem telling the students as much. The students were very excited to meet Triche and left camp encouraged to stay on track for graduation and onto college.

Other guests at camp included former NBA player and Syracuse Alumnus, John Wallace, former Razor Sharks, James(Mook) Reeves, Nigel Moore, and former All Greater Rochester Player of the Year, Terell Kittelberger.
